Locking and unlocking databases

Locking and unlocking databases

An administrator or manager can lock a database to prevent others from accessing data during database maintenance or to improve performance during certain procedures, like generating a large report.

While the database is locked, only the user who locked it and other administrators can access it or unlock it.

To complete this procedure you must have the appropriate permissions assigned to you. For more information, see About user roles and permissions.

To lock a database

  1. From the Tools menu, point to Database Maintenance, and then click Lock/Unlock Database.

The Lock Database dialog box displays users currently logged in. If no users are logged in, the database locks immediately.

  1. If users are logged in, complete the fields in the Lock Database dialog box as needed, and then click OK. For field definitions press F1.

All logged in users receive a warning message. After the delay period, the system logs everyone out and locks the database.

To unlock a database

  • From the Tools menu, point to Database Maintenance, and then click Lock/Unlock Database.
