About opportunities

An opportunity is a potential sale to a contact. You create detailed records of opportunities by specifying information such as the stage (where the opportunity is in the sales process), products and services, and closing dates, and you can also graph a pipeline that gives you an overall picture of your opportunities and where they are in the sales process. From the Opportunity List, you can access all opportunities; from the contact's, group's, or company's opportunities tab, you can access opportunities that relate to the contact, group, or company record.

Additionally, you can schedule a follow-up activity, track your sales progress using graphs and reports, and create a quote that you can print for a customer. The quote includes details for the opportunity, such as quantity, price, and total. You can also make the opportunity private so that other users cannot view it.

Opportunity history is created when you complete and close the sale, change the status or stage of the opportunity, or change the estimated closing date. History records are listed in the History tab and the Summary Report. For more information about the Summary Report, see Viewing a Summary Report for an opportunity.

You can view your opportunities in the Opportunity List by navigating to the list and create a lookup of specific opportunities that can be filtered. The number, weighted, and grand totals for your opportunities display in the Opportunity List status bar. The weighted total is a calculation based on the product total and the probability of closing the opportunities. The grand total is the sum of all opportunities in the list, regardless of stage.

From the Opportunity List, you can view a complete list of opportunities, even the opportunities for contacts you cannot access; however, if you do not have access to the contact, the contact name does not display.

Users with an Administrator or Manager role can customize opportunity processes, stages, and product lists, and they can change the Record Manager for another user's public opportunities.
