About restoring databases and personal files

The three options for restoring a database are:

  • Restore - This option restores all system files to their original locations on the original computer. This restore option is most commonly used when data is lost or files are corrupted.

  • Restore as - This option allows you restore the database to a new location and use a different filename. This option is useful when you want to copy a database for another user or move the database to another computer.

When restoring to a different file name, you must choose a valid database name. See Naming an ACT! database.

If you synchronize data, restoring your database to a location other than the original location breaks the synchronization relationship.

  • Unpack and Restore Remote Database - This option allows you to unpack and restore a remote database for synchronizing with the main database. The remote database is created on the main database by the administrator, delivered to the remote user/location, and then must be unpacked and restored for synchronization.

You can also restore any personal files that you have backed up. Personal files are not associated with contact records and include files such as personal word-processing documents.
