Create an outline or multi-level list

  1. In Page view, at the bottom of the document window, click Design Button image.
  2. Place the insertion point where you want to create an outline or multi-level list.
  3. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, and then click the Numbers tab.
  4. Click the box with the style of numbers or letters that you want to start with, and then click OK.
  5. For each item or line of text that you want in the outline or multi-level list, regardless of its level, type the text, and then press ENTER.
  6. When you have typed the last item, press ENTER twice to end the list.
  7. To place each item on the correct level, do one of the following:
    • To move items down to the next consecutive level, select the items, and then click Increase Indent Button image twice.
    • To format items as a paragraph on the current level (without bullets or numbering), select the items, and then click Increase Indent Button image once.
    • To move items up to previous level(s), select the items, and then click Decrease Indent Button image one or more times, as needed.
  8. To apply numbering or lettering styles to the different levels, select an item on a level or sublevel, right-click, and then click List Properties on the shortcut menu.
  9. On the Numbers tab, click the box with the style you want to use.
