About using Data Views and Web site templates based on SharePoint Services

If your Web site is located on a Web server running Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, you can add data features and custom design and page elements to your site by using Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. Some features, such as Data Views and specific Web site templates are available only if your site is based on Windows SharePoint Services.

Data Views

If your Web site is located on a Web server running Windows SharePoint Services, you can add Data Views that extract data from a variety of available data sources — for example, Extensible Markup Language (XML) files, Web services, SharePoint lists, and OLE DB–compliant databases such as SQL Server, DB2, and Oracle — and create custom views of that data on a Web page. When you add a Data View to a page, you can customize the view by using the Formatting toolbar or, for more advanced customizations, the Data View Details task pane.

Windows SharePoint Services, which is built on the Microsoft .NET Framework, provides the component-based platform required for FrontPage data-driven functionality. For this reason, you cannot add Data Views to a Web site that is not based on Windows SharePoint Services.

Site templates

Web site templates enable you to create a Web site quickly by generating predesigned pages complete with formatting and design elements. When you design your Web site by using templates based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, you can add a wide array of features and technologies based on SharePoint lists, libraries, surveys, and Web Parts – including Data Views. In addition, you can customize your site by using FrontPage.

With the exception of the Team Site template, which is available in both SharePoint Team Services v1.0 and Windows SharePoint Services, the following templates are available only if your Web site is located on a server running Windows SharePoint Services.

  • Team Site   By using this template, you can create a Web site to organize and share information with others. The Team Site template includes a document library and SharePoint lists such as Announcements, Events, Contacts, and Quick Links. This template is available for both SharePoint Team Services v1.0 and Windows SharePoint Services.

  • Blank Site   By using this template, you can create a Web site based on Windows SharePoint Services that contains a blank home page. By using FrontPage, you can add interactive lists or any other Windows SharePoint Services features to the Web site.

  • Document Workspace   By using this template, you can create a Web site based on Windows SharePoint Services that enables colleagues to work together on documents. Document Workspace provides a document library for storing the primary document and supporting files, a Tasks list for assigning to-do items, and a Links list for resources related to the document.

  • Basic Meeting Workspace   By using this template, you can create a Web site based on Windows SharePoint Services that contains the necessary SharePoint lists to plan, organize, and track a meeting. Basic Meeting Workspace contains Objectives, Attendees, and Agenda lists.

  • Blank Meeting Workspace   By using this template, you can create a Meeting Workspace without predefined SharePoint lists or libraries. By using FrontPage, you can add interactive lists or any other Windows SharePoint Services features to the Web site.

  • Decision Meeting Workspace   By using this template, you can create a Meeting Workspace where you can review documents and record decisions. The Decision Meeting Workspace template contains the following SharePoint lists and libraries: Objectives, Attendees, Agenda, document libraries, Tasks, and Decisions.

  • Social Meeting Workspace   By using this template, you can create a Meeting Workspace that enables you to plan social events. Social Meeting Workspace contains the following SharePoint lists, libraries, and Web Parts: Discussion board, picture library, Attendees, directions, weather, image/logo, and Things to Bring.
