About Web packages

Web packages are bundled collections of files that you import or export for use in a Web site. Web packages can contain Web pages, templates, Web components, themes, graphics, style sheets, and other elements.

Microsoft FrontPage includes predesigned Web package solutions, which are self-contained, data-driven Web sites based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. You can also create Web packages by using files within your existing site.

You can use the predesigned Web package solutions as a starting point for creating a News and Reviews site or a Web Log. You can also deploy the solutions to extend the functionality of an existing site based on Windows SharePoint Services.

FrontPage contains two predesigned Web package solutions.

  • News and Reviews site   By using the News and Reviews site, you can deploy a data-driven news Web site, enabled by Windows SharePoint Services, that supports reviews, discussions, and other interactive Web site features.
  • Web Log   By using the Web Log solution, you can deploy a data-driven Web log, enabled by Windows SharePoint Services, that supports Web log search, discussion comments for each log entry, favorite links, and other reporting features.

When you create a Web package, you can identify dependencies — files required by the packaged files — and add them automatically.

For example, you can create a Dynamic Web Template for your Web site and then attach it to several pages in your site. You can apply a theme that you've customized to those pages, and then you can add graphics that you've created by using a graphics editing tool. You can then use Web packages to export those files — including the Dynamic Web Template, the themes, and the custom graphics — to a single file that you can import to another Web site or make available for other FrontPage users to import.

Security

  • Avoid adding Universal Data Connection (UDC) files to a Web package. A UDC file is an XML file, stored in the _fpdatasources folder, that contains configuration information for a data source. UDC files can contain passwords in plain text.

  • Avoid packaging SharePoint document or picture libraries that contain files. When other users import the Web package, those files will be added to their Web site.
