About working with XML

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is the universal format for data on the World Wide Web. XML allows developers to easily describe and deliver rich, structured data in a standard, consistent way. XML does not replace HTML; rather, it is a complementary format.

By using Microsoft FrontPage, you can view or edit XML files, apply standard formatting to the structure of code in XML files, view the XML tree, and create custom displays of XML data on Web pages. For example, you can create a Web page that displays data from an XML file, format that data by using the formatting commands on the Formatting toolbar, and apply filtering, sorting, and conditional formatting to display the data how you want.

When you work with XML files directly, it's important that the files contain well formed XML. Since the rules governing the syntax of XML tags are stricter than those for HTML, if an XML file is missing a tag or an attribute, the file will not render correctly. For this reason, you can use FrontPage to apply XML formatting rules in files containing XML.
