Troubleshoot automatic text corrections

ShowI want to undo an automatic correction.

  • Click the AutoCorrect Options button Button image, and then click the Undo (automatic correction or capitalization) command or the Change back to (previous formatting) command. The command varies depending on the type of correction.

ShowHow can I turn off automatic text corrections?

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoCorrect tab.
  2. Do one or more of the following:
    • To turn off the capitalization options, clear the check boxes (second through sixth) relating to capitalization.
    • To turn off corrections to misspellings or typos, clear the Replace text as you type check box.
    • To turn off formatting corrections, on the AutoFormat As You Type tab, clear the check boxes for types of automatic formatting you don't want. This includes automatic hyperlinks, dashes, symbols, and other options.

ShowAutoCorrect doesn't fix my misspelling.

  • AutoCorrect might be turned off for replacing text as you type. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, click the AutoCorrect tab, and be sure the Replace text as you type check box is selected.
  • You might need to add the word you want corrected to the entries in the AutoCorrect dialog box. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoCorrect tab. In the Replace box, type the word or phrase you want corrected. In the With box, type the word or phrase replacement, and then click Add.

ShowI can't find the AutoCorrect Options button.

  • Rest your mouse near the text that was corrected, point to the small, blue box that appears near it, and the AutoCorrect Options button Button image will appear. Click it to see the options.
  • If you don't see the button, on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and on the AutoCorrect tab, select the Show AutoCorrect Options buttons check box. This must be on for the button to display.

ShowI don't want those buttons to appear after an automatic correction.

To turn off the AutoCorrect Options button, on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect. On the AutoCorrect tab, clear the Show AutoCorrect Options buttons check box.
