Search options
You can use the asterisk (*) and question mark (?) wildcard characters to help you find and replace text. For example, you can use the asterisk (*) wildcard to search for a string of characters ("s*d" finds "sad" and "started") and the question mark (?) to find any single character ("s?t" finds "sat" and "set").
- On the Edit menu, click Find or Replace.
- In the Find or Replace task pane, select the Use wildcards check box.
- In the Find what box, type the text you want to search for, including the wildcard character.
- If you want to replace the item, type a replacement in the Replace with box.
- Click
Find Next,
Replace, or
Replace All.
To cancel a search in progress, press ESC.
- To search for a character that's defined as a wildcard, type a backslash (\) before the character. For example, type \? to find a question mark.
If you want to find a specific word, such as "form," and you want to ignore the word when it occurs as part of another word, such as "format," you can use the Find whole words only option.
- On the Edit menu, click Find or Replace.
- In the Find what box in the Find or Replace task pane, type the text that you want to search for.
- Select the Find whole words only check box.
- If you want to replace the item, type what you want to use as a replacement in the Replace with box.
- Click
Find Next,
Replace, or
Replace All.
To cancel a search in progress, press ESC.
Search by matching letter case
You can increase your chances of finding only the specific word you want by using the Match case option. The Match case option looks only for text that has the exact capitalization that you specify in the Find what box. For example, if you type “AJ” in the Find what box and Match case is selected as a search option, InfoPath will find only instances of “AJ” and will not return any occurrences of “aj.”
- On the Edit menu, click Find or Replace.
- In the Find what box in the Find or Replace task pane, type the text that you want to search the form for.
- Select the Match case check box.
- If you want to replace the item, type what you want to use as a replacement in the Replace with box.
- Click
Find Next,
Replace, or
Replace All.
To cancel a search in progress, press ESC.
Notes
- When filling out a form, the Find and Replace features search only the text you type into the form and not text that is part of the form template, such as field labels.
- Although you can search the text in a read-only text box, you won't be able to replace that text.
