What is a virus?

A virus is software that damages a computer. A virus can be spread when a contact sends you an executable file, which you activate by double-clicking the file. Once the virus is activated, it attaches copies of itself to other programs in your computer.

Here are some precautions you can take to avoid computer viruses:

  • Do not open a file if you suspect it contains a virus. Delete the file from your computer. (The location of files sent to you through Windows Messenger is specified on the Preferences tab of the Options dialog box.)
  • Always verify that the person sending the file actually sent it. Send them an instant message asking them if they sent the file. Often viruses are sent from contacts in your list without their knowledge.
  • Be cautious about opening files from people you do not know. Remember that in Windows Messenger you can control who is on your contact list and who you want to allow to send you messages.
  • Make sure your computer's antivirus software is up to date.
  • Back up the data on your hard drive regularly.
  • For more information about protecting your computer from viruses and about viruses in general, go to the Microsoft Security Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/security/).
