To send an instant message to someone who is not on your list

You can send instant messages to people who are not on your contact list, provided they have Windows Messenger installed.

In the main window, under I want to..., click Send an Instant Message.
On the Other tab, type the person's e-mail address or sign-in name, and then click OK.

Notes

If I want to... is not visible, on the Tools menu, click Show Actions Pane.
If your instant message cannot be delivered, ask the recipient to click the Tools menu, click Options, click the Privacy tab, and make sure that Other .NET Messenger Service users is in the Allow list.
