Windows Messenger .NET

To configure your network for voice, video, or data collaboration

Note: This information is for network administrators and those who understand how to configure computer systems that have firewalls or network address translators (NATs).

If you have trouble using Windows Messenger for voice or video conversations, sharing applications, or using Remote Assistance, it might be because you or the person you are calling is behind a firewall or NAT that prevents a direct connection to the Internet.

If you are connecting to the Internet through a firewall or NAT, do the following to help prevent problems:

  1. Ensure that your NAT is enabled for the UPnP framework. If you are not sure what type of NAT you have, check with your computer manufacturer or NAT vendor.
  2. Configure your NAT so that all Windows Messenger features work. For more information, see Windows Messenger in Windows XP: Working with Firewalls and Network Address Translation Devices (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/techinfo/deployment/natfw/).

* Note

If you are still having problems, keep in mind that the firewall or NAT causing the problem might be one you don't control—such as that of your Internet service provider.
