Troubleshoot document libraries in Datasheet view
I cannot open a document library in Datasheet view.
This could be due to one or both of the following reasons:
- You cannot open a list or document library in Datasheet view if your computer is not set up to support the view. Make sure your computer meets the software requirements for displaying the Datasheet view.
- You are currently viewing the library in Explorer view. The Explorer view of a library does not support Datasheet view, so the view toolbar does not show the Edit in Datasheet button. Switch to another view, then click the Edit in Datasheet button.
I don't see any of the folders in the view.
This could be due to one of the following reasons:
- The library does not contain any folders.
- The Folders settings of the view is set to Show all documents without folders. To change this setting, edit the view definition and change the setting in the Folders section.
You cannot edit a document in the following situations:
- The document was not created using Microsoft Office. You can only edit documents created using an Office application such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint.
- If you simply click a document in Datasheet view, it opens a read-only copy. To edit a document, right-click the document, point to Document, then click Edit Document.
- The document is checked out to another user. You cannot edit a document that is currently checked out by another user. Wait for the user to check the document in, then try again.
I cannot check in or check out a document.
This could be due to one of the following reasons:
- The document is checked out to another user. You cannot check out a document that is currently checked out by another user. Wait for the user to check the document in, and then try again.
- You have not checked out the document, so you cannot check the document in.
I cannot view the versions of a document.
The Document Versions setting of the document library is not set to support document versions. To change this, in the Document Library Settings page, under the Document Versions section, select Yes.
I cannot modify parts of a library.
This could be due one of the following reasons:
- Some columns in the view, such as Modified and Modified By, are always read-only. Other columns or rows might be read-only due to a variety of reasons.
- You cannot change the icon that is displayed in the Type column or the extension of a document.
- If a document is checked out to another user, the entire row is read-only until the user checks the document back in.
