Troubleshooting FTP Connections

If you are running FTP and have difficulty opening a connection, try the following:

  • Verify that the server name or address is correct. If you specified the server name and it did not work, try specifying its IP address instead.
  • Addresses are specified in dot notation as follows:

value.value.value.value

If this format works and specifying a server name does not, the server name is not being translated to the correct address.
  • See your system administrator to verify that the remote host is responding and running a server implementation of FTP.
  • You can use the FTP command line window for troubleshooting purposes. When you are using the FTP command line window, the command that you use depends upon whether you are performing a local operation (on the PC) or an FTP server operation.
    Note:
For troubleshooting purposes, the FTP protocol logs commands and replies to a trace file if you select the Trace FTP Protocol Commands and Replies check box on the Connection tab of the Preferences dialog box. When a trace file is created, the default file name is server.flg, where server is the name of your particular server. You can create your own log file by typing its name in the Override Default Trace File box.
