Connecting Using the FTP Dialog Box

You can open a single connection or multiple connections to perform server-to-server transfers.

To connect using the FTP dialog box:

  1. On the Connection menu, click Open.
  2. Specify the FTP server to which you want to connect, for example, ftp.hcl.com.

By default, FTP displays the name of the last server to which you connected in the Server Name box. To specify another FTP server, type its name or IP address in the Server Name box, or select a server from the drop-down list box.

See your system administrator if you do not know the name of the FTP server.
  1. In the appropriate boxes, type your user name and password for the FTP server you specified.

Select the Anonymous FTP check box if the FTP server is a valid anonymous site on the Internet. The word Anonymous automatically appears in the User Name box. Type your Internet e-mail address in the Password box. If you have already supplied FTP with your e-mail address, it automatically appears in the Password box.
Note:
You cannot use Anonymous FTP if you use the Secure Shell option. The Secure Shell option appears if you have the Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack installed.
  1. Type your account in the Account box if the FTP server requires one.
  2. To specify your initial directory on the remote system, type the path in the Initial Directory box.

The form your directory takes depends upon the remote system. For example, a UNIX system uses the form /usr/mydir; a PC system uses the form \usr\mydir. You can also specify a directory name in the form mydir. If the path and/or directory you specify does not exist or is inaccessible, the initial directory does not change.
  1. In the Default Sys. list box, click the type of FTP server you specified in Step 2 above. You can set the default system to UNIX, VMS, DOS, OS/2, NT, MVS, VM/CMS, VM/VPS, VOS, or Other to perform this step if your FTP server identifies its system type.
  2. Select the Force Default System Type check box to set the system type if the server does not identify its system type or if it is not supported by FTP.
    Note:
Problems can occur if the server identifies itself as a particular system type but does not exactly follow the conventions of that system (for instance, because of differing international date and time formats). In this case, you can force the system type to another type, such as Other.
  3. If you want to use a secure connection, select the Secure Shell check box. For more information, see the topic “Using FTP with Connectivity Secure Shell” in this help.
    Note:
The Secure Shell option is available only if you have the Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack installed. You cannot use Anonymous FTP if you use the Secure Shell option.
  4. In the command box, type the name of the command file, or click Browse to search for it.
  5. Click Open.
