The operation of the Oracle provider requires the installation of an Oracle database client on the same machine. This chapter describes the installation of Oracle 10g release 1 databases on Windows XP and Linux x86 (RHEL3) and the installation of an Oracle 10g full client on Linux x86 (RHEL3).

The operation of the SQL Server provider does not require the installation of a SQL Server client. This provider uses ODBC drivers installed with Windows XP to talk to the SQL Server database. You will find the availability of a SQL Server client on your machine useful so the installations of a SQL Server 2000 client and a SQL Server 2005 client are described.
