Installation Overview

Because TRAVERSE uses Microsoft SQL Server as a backend database, Microsoft SQL Server must be installed before TRAVERSE. However, in cases with a limited number of users, it may not be cost-effective to purchase Microsoft SQL Server. For situations such as these, Microsoft has made available Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Edition (also known as the Microsoft Data Engine) or MSDE.

MSDE offers improved reliability and data integrity, better security, and a vast performance increase compared to a TRAVERSE desktop version.

MSDE is similar to Access Runtime in the following ways:

• It is a fully functional database engine.

• There is no interface. All data interaction must take place through the application software.

• It is available free of charge on the TRAVERSE 10.1 CD.
