Troubleshoot fonts
Word displays fonts incorrectly.
Microsoft Office Word 2003 uses the Unicode text encoding standard, which enables it to store and display text in almost all languages. You may find that documents that displayed correctly in earlier versions of Word do not display correctly in Office Word 2003.
This problem typically occurs when documents use fonts that are incorrectly made or incomplete internally. These fonts may have worked with earlier versions of Word, if you didn't apply a different font to the text. Office Word 2003 can't correctly convert the text to Unicode because the fonts lack critical information about the text. As a result, you may see garbled text or boxes when you open the document in Office Word 2003. You can correct the display of these fonts by doing the following:
- Enable editing for the language in the document.
- Open the document.
- On the Tools menu, click Fix Broken Text.
- In the Document Language box, click the language for the text you want to repair.
When the tool has finished, the text should appear correctly.
I do not see some fonts in the Font list.
Microsoft Office Word 2003 uses the Unicode text encoding standard, making it unnecessary to display all the forms of each font. Instead, Word displays the typeface, and uses the correct portion of each font automatically.
Some fonts may not appear at all in the Font list because they are incomplete or were incorrectly made and therefore will not function with Word.
