If you turn on automatic language detection, the status bar indicates the language of the text that the insertion point is positioned in.
- If the proofing tools for a language was set to Installed on First Use during Microsoft Office 2003 Proofing Tools setup, proofing errors in that language may not be marked automatically as you type. To ensure that errors are marked automatically, install the proofing tools for the language. To do so from within Word, select text in that language, and then clicking Spelling and Grammar on the Tools menu. The installation process starts.
- To turn off automatic language detection for a single language, you can remove it from the list of enabled languages. However, you should remove the language only if you don't want to use tools for that language
— for example, date formats or East Asian style formatting — in Word and other Office programs. - To quickly set the language of text, double-click the language indicator in the status bar.
