About working with Simplified Chinese text
In addition to proofing tools such as the grammar and style checker and AutoCorrect list, Microsoft Office 2003 Proofing Tools provides tools designed specifically for working with Simplified Chinese text.
Simplified Chinese Input Method Editor (IME)
By using the Simplified Chinese Input Method Editor (IME), which is available on the Language bar, you can enter Simplified Chinese text in Office documents. You can also specify how you want to enter that text.
- Enable editing for Simplified Chinese.
- On the Language bar, make sure the language indicator shows Chinese (PRC). If it does not, click the language indicator, and then click Chinese (PRC).
- Place the insertion point where you want to enter Simplified Chinese text.
- On the Language bar, click the Language button to select the type of character you want to display.
Note This setting determines which characters appear on the screen as you type. It does not change the language setting of your keyboard.
- Type the text by using your keyboard.
As you type and complete each syllable, the letters are replaced by a list of replacement candidates. You can select a replacement from the list in order to ensure that the proper Chinese character is used to represent that syllable.
- Press SPACEBAR to replace the text with characters.
A dotted line appears beneath the characters and indicates that the string is “undetermined,” or awaiting your confirmation before being entered into the document. This undetermined state provides an opportunity for you to change the string if it was not converted exactly as you want.
- To determine the text and enter it into your document, do one of the following:
- If the text is correct, press ENTER.
- To change a character or characters, press the LEFT ARROW key. As the insertion point moves to each character, different character options appear in the candidate window. Select the option you want, and, when the character string is correct, press ENTER.
For more information about using the Simplified Chinese IME, see Help for that IME.
Text converter
By using the text converter tool, you can convert text from Simplified Chinese to Traditional Chinese or from Traditional Chinese to Simplified Chinese. This tool is available only in Microsoft Office Word 2003.
- Enable editing for Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
- If you want to convert only specific text, select the text.
- On the Tools menu, point to Language, and then click Chinese Translation.
- Under Translation direction, click the option you want.
- If you are converting text to Traditional Chinese and you want to specify whether to use character variants, select or clear the Use Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR, and Macao SAR character variants check box. Some traditional characters are variants that are not regarded as standard glyphs.
- If you want to specify whether to convert common terms at a word level, such as the word “computer,” select or clear the Translate common terms check box.
