Creating a Remote Printer Using LPR

Before creating a remote printer, ensure you have defined your printer properly on the host and ensure the host is running an LPD server program.

To create a remote printer using LPR:

  1. On the Printer menu, click Add Remote Printer. The LPR - Add LPR Port and Remote Printer dialog box opens with the Port Name and the User ID filled in. The port name is the first available HCL LPR Port and the User ID is the name of the user currently logged in.
  2. In the Host box, type the name of the remote host.
  3. In the Queue name box, type the printer queue name.
    Note:
In BSD systems, the queue name is specified in the host’s /etc/printcap file. In non-BSD systems, type lpstat -t at the host’s command prompt to list available queue names.
  4. In the Advanced section, specify connection options:

Timeout in seconds—Specifies how long LPR will try to connect to a printer before terminating the attempt.

Read Host’s Queue—Select this option to automatically display any available queue state information (for example, printer problems, job list, and queue problems) from the host in the printer window. Not all hosts provide queue information.

Graceful Close—Prevents the socket from closing until confirmation is received that the job has been delivered.
  1. Click OK. A window for the remote printer opens.
