Amazon EBS Concepts

Amazon EBS volumes provide the following:

  • Off-instance storage

  • Persistence beyond the lifetime of instances

  • High availability and reliability

  • Ability to attach to and detach from a running instance

  • Exposure as a device within an instance

Amazon EBS snapshots provide the following:

  • Ability to capture the current state of a volume

  • Data backup

  • A method for instantiating new volumes that contain the exact contents of a snapshot
