Creating an Amazon EBS-Backed AMI

This section describes how to create an AMI that uses an Amazon EBS volume as its root device, which is easier to create than AMIs that use instance stores as their root devices. More importantly, instances launched from these AMIs launch faster and use persistent storage. For more information, see AMI and Instance Concepts.

Amazon EBS-backed instances are stored as Amazon EBS snapshots. Standard storage rates apply.

This procedure is applicable for both Amazon EBS-backed Linux/UNIX and Windows AMIs.
