padding-left Attribute | paddingLeft Property


Sets or retrieves the amount of space to insert between the left border of the object and the content.

Syntax

HTML{ padding-left: sPadding }
Scriptingobject.style.paddingLeft [ = sPadding ]

Possible Values

sPadding String that specifies one of the following values:
lengthFloating-point number, followed by an absolute units designator (cm, mm, in, pt, pc, or px) or a relative units designator (em or ex). For more information about the supported length units, see CSS Length Units.
percentageInteger, followed by a %. The value is a percentage of the width of the parent object.

The property is read/write with a default value of 0; the cascading style sheets (CSS) attribute is not inherited.

Expressions can be used in place of the preceding value(s), as of Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5. For more information, see dynamic propertiesInternet Link.

Remarks

To use this property, inline elements must have an absolute position or layout. Element layout is set by providing a value for the height property or the width property.

Negative values are not allowed.

Example

The following examples use the padding-left attribute and the paddingLeft property to change the padding of the object.

This example uses TD as a selector in an embedded style sheet to set the left padding for all table cells to 1 centimeter.
