Panning means to scroll continuously. You can pan horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in both directions!
Note that panning only works in applications that support the Microsoft Intellimouse and that many of those applications limit the directions that you can pan in (Examples: Microsoft Word only lets you pan vertically; Microsoft Excel will let you pan vertically and horizontally, but not diagonally).
