Infineon Security Platform Solution - User Initialization Wizard

Configuring your Encrypting File System (EFS)

With this wizard page you can configure an easy access to your encrypted EFS data. It also allows you to revert to Microsoft EFS without Security Platform protection.

The following table gives hints on how to use this wizard page.

Wizard Page Element Explanation
EFS folder Select this option to create an encrypted folder Documents\Encrypted Data or My Documents\Encrypted Data (depending on your operating system).

This option is not always available (e.g. if you already had created the EFS folder before, or due to desktop.ini settings, or due to file system type FAT32).

Desktop shortcut Select this option if you want to access your EFS folder via a desktop shortcut.

icon If you uncheck the checkbox when you already had created the Desktop shortcut before, the wizard will delete the existing shortcut (as long as it was not renamed or moved meanwhile).

icon Revert... Click here to revert to the default EFS functionality (Microsoft EFS) without Security Platform protection.

After reverting to Microsoft EFS, the file and folder encryption will work as follows:

  • You will be able to access all your encrypted data, as long as your EFS certificate and private key are usable. After EFS revert, the first access to a file encrypted with the Security Platform Solution requires your EFS certificate, private key and user authentication. Once such a file has been accessed it will be automatically re-encrypted with the new Microsoft EFS certificate.
  • New files will be encrypted with Microsoft EFS included in your operating system (without Security Platform protection).

Recommendation: Decrypt existing EFS files, if you cannot ensure that your EFS certificate and private key will be usable as long as you want to access these files.

icon This button is only available, if you had already configured EFS before and have selected to configure it again.
